Sarah Palin resigns as Governer of Alaska

VERY interesting. This looks to me like the start of a presidential bid (why choose a low-Washington-news weekend unless you *want* attention?). At the very least, she seems to be gunning for control/dominance of the Republican party. At least that's how I interpret her resignation. Whether or not that's a good strategy is another idea.

No idea. And I think Fridays are generally considered slow news days, good for getting less attention, so a different first thought is "I wonder what the scandal will be?"

Resigning, as opposed to not running for re-election, seems odd for a presidential bid; she'd have a couple years between stepping down and the election, so why invite the onus of running away from her job? If she's going for the 2010 Senate seat that might make more sense, though stepping down would seem less necessary -- no logistical handicap (vs. campaigning in Iowa and NH from Alaska)

Her excuse was not wanting to be a lame duck, having decided not to run again, which seems idiosyncratic at best.

All in all it's odd as a piece of strategy. As a fix for hidden psychological stress, or to beat out a scandal, it'd be more common. But I'm told she seemed normal.
